Well maybe it will go away! Ever heard this before? Pain is your
body’s way of telling you something is wrong. Although pain is
unpleasant be thankful that your body was created with this valuable
mechanism, otherwise you would never know if you had a cavity.
Welcome to the world and expense of a root canal! Much less
costly to catch it early.
The muscular-skeletal system is made up of
over 600 muscles and about 206 bones, tendons and ligaments.
Many times we as human beings have a tendency to overwork our
systems resulting in torn muscle fiber and painful spasms. Once we
pull a muscle it will usually pull on what it connects to, such
as bone. Did you know the muscle called the psoas, when it gets
tight, it can usually cause lower back pain? This muscle connects
to the vertebrae L1,2,3,4 within the lower back. The sad thing is
most people ignore it or go to the doctor, get xrays {which wont
show the problem} and go back home with a prescription of muscle
relaxers. Such a high tech society we live in however without
hands on application nothing was really done. High tech medicine
cant replace hands on work such as massage therapy or stretching
for relief of chronic pain. Have you ever seen a $5000.00 massage
chair at the mall work your psoas or piriformis?
Ok here is a simple exercise hold your hand out
in front of you pull out some dental floss and wrap it around a
finger, ouch notice the lack of blood flow that is having a
difficult time getting to the tip of your finger right. How do
you think your nerve feels in your back when it gets pinched? Yes
we know posture and muscle function become a big issue at this
point, especially over a period of time. So lets get real how do
you deal with the tension do you take some advil, grab a beer,
seek a surgeon, go to the gym and lift weights to try and
strengthen the area, or just live with it.
Life changing events sudden or abrupt may result
in muscle spasms. Life as we know it can be viewed as adaptation
to the demands, obstructions, and assaults that we encounter and
place upon our bodies. Emotional stress creates tight muscles which
limits mobility. Limited mobility is a major factor in your
flexibility. Ever try to get through your day with a stiff neck
not to fun is it, sometimes the simple fact is we take for
granted that we have as much flexibility as we do and in return
we don’t even take a mere 30min. out of our day to stretch for
ourselves. If you cant find 30min. in your day your probably just
too busy! I am certain sooner or later this will catch up with
you and you will wonder why you didn’t take some time out for
yourself.
Remember the mind body connection is very
connected and when one under goes stress they need to find a way
to release it. I am David Ralston a Licensed Massage Therapist and
believe in the work of massage and stretching and hope you take
some time out for yourself. After all if there is one person that
deserves an hour of your time its yourself.
